Jackson Pollock was an influential American painter, creator of the so called “Action Painting” movement, which centered around a style of painting in which paint is spontaneously dribbled on the canvas. Without doubt he’s among the very most well-known abstract impressionists on earth.
At sixteen years old he joined the Los Angeles’ Manual Arts High School. After this he moved to New York City where he studied under Thomas Hart Benton, an American painter and muralist with his oldest brother Charles Pollock at the Art Students League of New York.!
During his life in New York he’d appreciated the reception of several successful exhibits. The New York Times reported James Sweeney’s words “Pollock’s gift is volcanic. It’s fire. It’s unpredictable… It’s munificent, volatile, untidy…” but despite this, Pollock’s paintings were unsuccessful when it came to sales. It’s intriguing that Pollock’s paintings which was sold during his lifetime’s priciest brought him just $ 8000. Yet now the priciest painting ever sold in the world is No. 5, 1948 by Jackson Pollock. It was sold for $ 140,000,000. !
In 1945 Pollock and Lee Krasner, an American abstract expressionist painter married, and they went to a little house in East Hampton, Long Island. Right in this house, or to be more exact in the shed, Pollock’s renowned “Dripper Painting” came into the world and Jackson Pollock became the “Jack the Dripper”. Pollock set the canvas on the ground and covered it with the paint drops that dripped down from hand or his brush.
In his early years Pollock attended camp meetings with Jiddu Krishnamurti, a popular Indian writer and speaker on religious and philosophical matters. Part of Jiddu’s teachings was that truth can only be reached by a person through instinct, through a procedure of independent, free “investigation” of the character. These words clearly had an extremely important impact on Pollock’s creative work.
Pollock and alcoholism fought all his life. Sadly in 1956 Pollock perished in a car accident whilst drunk, and lost the fight. Now the little house in East Hampton is the Pollock-Krasner House and Study Centre.
In 2000 an Academy Award-winning biographical drama film directed by and starring Ed Harris was produced, only entitled ‘Pollock.’ If you would like to dip into Pollock’s world and feel like you’re not absent during his impetuous work this movie is what you want. Pollock’s unpredictable and distinguishing persona, along with his exceptional ability, have become part of the history of the art world and come across powerfully in the movie.
