Thanksgiving Pilgrims Still Landing in Sunnyvale On Sunday November 23rd at 11:00am

Sunnyvale, CA (PRWEB) November 21, 2014

This Sunday, November 23, 2014 at 11 AM the rightful heirs to the Pilgrim Thanksgiving heritage in Sunnyvale CA will remember their pilgrim origins by observing a meal together, worshipping, and dressing up in Pilgrim cuisine.

Their new pastor, an African American and openly homosexual guy says, “I’m not the very first picture that comes to mind when one thinks of the Pilgrims, nor is our modern Silicon Valley building which was truly constructed before there was a Silicon Valley. This congregation is just one of almost 6,000 nationally in a denomination that now calls itself, the United Church of Christ (UCC) with about 1.1 million members,” says, Pastor Ron Buford. ‘”The Pilgrims only had poor PR. “The Pilgrims were enormous innovators both socially and technologically. “The Pilgrims wore brilliant colours during the week. On their way to Plymouth “The Pilgrims stopped over in PTown because they ran out of beer. The Pilgrims even relaxed rules about premarital sex provided there was a suitable engagement.” Buford should understand something about this history because he comes to Sunnyvale after serving in the staff of the nearly 350 year old Old South Church in Boston where Ben Franklin was baptized, Sam Adams was a deacon, Phillis Wheatley, the first published African American poet became a member by her very own bureau, and Old South Church was home to the initial Boston Tea Party.

“Whatever became of the Pilgrims, Buford asks rhetorically? We became the two most progressive religious groups in America: The Congregationalists who largely became the UCC; as well as the Unitarian Universalists are the other group for whom Nina Kalmoutis is pastor and who now worship in an identical building at different times. Paradoxically, the Congregational Church at 1112 S. Bernardo rents space to what Pastor Ron calls, “our Unitarian Cousins:” we worship in the same refuge at distinct times right now, as an experiment. !

The Congregational Church went through a number of controversies involving staffing problems and its preschool but is coming in the opposite side with new perspective and a brand new pastor. Sunday’s sermon name sounds more like a Pilgrim sermon name than a progressive UCC Congregational Sermon: “Will There Really Be a Judgment?” Pastor Ron inquires with a wink.

Buford, no stranger to controversy, was the originator of the UCC’s God remains talking, effort and advertisements that both NBC and CBS prohibited as “too controversial at this time.” Pastor Buford says, “Our history is 400 years of raising hell on this particular continent and we would like to raise progressive free thinking kids who continue that tradition for the next 400 years. We ordained the first African American in the first openly homosexual guy in 1972, the very first girl in 1853, and a mainline denomination in 1785. If faith was a corporation, the UCC would be its research and development section. What better location for us Pilgrims? Though our Religion is over 2,000 years old, our thinking is not.”
