Shelter Island, NY (PRWEB) October 21, 2014
Penelope Moore, of Saunders & Associates, declared the Celebration of Historical Shelter Island Houses exhibit featured at Grenning Gallery was extended through October 31, 2014.
Both a town and island situated in the eastern end of Long Island, Shelter Island is an idyllic locale with residents who are able to trace their origins back to the American Revolution and historical properties, some really from the prewar age. Shelter Island is famous for being a popular refuge for artists, writers, photographers, and so on and is reachable via North Haven to the South, and may be reached simply by ferry from the North.
“The launch on October 11th was well received,” Moore said, “so Laura Grenning has graciously permitted the paintings to stay on display through the end of the month.” Moore continued, “Shelter Island has historical houses in the housing marketplace right now, each with a story to tell and a unique spot in our Island’s history. It appears fitting to introduce paintings, vintage photos and artifacts that artists have created over the years memorializing these properties at the Grenning Gallery in Sag Harbor.”
Contained among those paintings present is an extremely wonderful early 19th century painting by Shelter Island’s Walter Cole Brigham (died 1870) depicting The Duvall Homestead at 140 North Ferry Road. The Homestead, on 2.7 acres, which contains an initial wing dating to before the American Revolution has water views of the historical Sylvester Manor, Shelter Island’s first plantation. Other featured paintings contains a contribution from folk artist Rodman Pell.

Classic photographs of the 1880’s farmhouse once “The Harbor Inn”, possessed by Nik Cohn and Michaela Muntean, are also on display. Cohn is a British journalist, believed by many to be the “daddy of rock criticism”. He also composed the source material for “Saturday Night Fever”. Muntean is a writer who has composed over 65 Sesame Street children’s books, and worked with Jim Henson and The Muppets.

Also presented is an early 1920’s billboard from a Dering Harbor Village estate owned Sylvester Manor, Shelter Island’s first plantation. This, along with property signs and several other classic farm, were found in one of the few remaining barns in the enclave, that is the lowest incorporated Village in America of Shelter Island.
“I believed that revealing old paintings and pictures of these wonderful artists escapes on Shelter Island are a perfect fit for the Grenning Gallery devotees”, said Laura Grenning when she planned this exhibit. The properties are really for sale, while the paintings are just for display.
