Versace Mansion Auction
It’s been a rocky road for one of the nation’s most expensive and illustrious mansions, and if houses could speak, this one would tell you the storyline of the delights and disappointments of its 83 years.
& #13;
The mansion was constructed in 1930 by Alden Freeman who was an architect and philanthropist with links to the Standard Oil fortune. He modeled the house in the Dominican Republic after the Alcazar de Colon mansion. Alcazar de Colon was the residence of the oldest existing house in the Western Hemisphere and the son of Christopher Columbus. The house was bought by Jacques Amsterdam, who called it The Amsterdam Palace after Freeman died in 1937. From 1937 until 1992 when designer-to the-stars (think Madonna, Princess Diana and Cher) Gianni Versace bought the property, the house was somewhat of a crash pad for assorted hipsters and intellectuals and the estate’s upkeep was spotty. !
& #13;
Versace purchased an adjoining lot in 1992 and The Amsterdam Palace for nearly $ 10 million and spent millions to renew the house to its former glory. He added a 6,100 square foot south wing, a mosaic-covered courtyard, frescoes on the house the ceilings, and of ‘s walls a golden-lined swimming pool with over one million hand-set mosaic tiles. Versace renamed it Casa Casuarina and invested about $ 33 million in the place.
& #13;
Gianni designed and lived in his Casa Casuarina in Miami Beach until his untimely death in 1997 when he was shot in the mansion’s front steps by a demented stalker. For Gianni, life was all about modern sophistication with a leaning towards the glamor of old world. He surrounded himself with prints and glowing opulence of historical derivation. When Gianni Versace created Casa Casuarina, he poured everything he knew about his trademark style into it, emblazoned with the stamp of his character that was excessive.!
& #13;
After Versace’s departure, telecommunications millionaire Peter Loftin at a bargain cost of $ 19 million for the property and the majority of the house’s artwork bought Casa Casuarina. Loftin afterwards rent the house to Barton G Weiss and his Barton G Group who ran it as a very costly boutique hotel with 10 suites and called it the Villa by Barton G. Speeds began at about $ 900 per night and went up to over $ 2000.
Unfortunately, now finding itself in foreclosure, Gianni Versace’s refined private palace in South Beach, initially recorded at $ 125 million, will sell Tuesday, September 17, 2013 – held on premises. Bid begins at $ 25 million.
